Bakar by BIG

I've always wanted to try out this place since they opened years back as it was from the famous big group but I never had the chance to. This time i around i was staying nearby in PJ and I realized it was not far off.

The small restaurant was stowed away among a row of shops i Lorong Kurau which can be easily missed. We Wazed our way there and was surprised that we reached a row of shops with chic restaurants in a quiet neighborhood.

We booked our seats from the website as we read that it can be quite full. They also have free valet parking for customers. The restaurant is quite dim from the outside and we were not sure if it was open but when we stood there, they opened the door and let us in of course.

We were quite surprised on how small it was and the decor was pretty simple and had an open concept counter where you could sew them prepare the food.

I always go with a friend to a new place so i could at least try a few things on the menu. We ordered a starter, 2 mains and a dessert. For the starter we had squid. We could see the squid being grilled in front of us an it was quite impressive. The squid was simple yet tasty, it was grilled to perfection as it was still juicy and the puree was not overwhelming and just right.

For the main we had the spring chicken which was once again flamed grilled in front of us. I was scared that he would burn my chicken as i was really hungry. When the chicken arrived, it was literally dripping in juice. I've never had chicken so simple yet so juicy. It was just served with pickles, some sauce and flatbread.

The next dish was wagyu intercostals. Basically its grilled cut meat, which obviously was the intercostals chewy parts served with Mantou buns, sambal and pickled veggies. The sambal was very mild for me, but the meat was amazing. It was tender and juicy and so fresh at the same time. it was good on its own.

For desserts, the waitress suggested charcoal pavlova and we had a try. First of all, its nothing like a pavlova. It was basically a charcoal meringue dome and upon breaking it, there was raspberry sorbet and chic mouse inside. It was different and unique and i didn't expect it to be this good. It did however stain my tongue and teeth black so if you're out on a date, I would consider something else.

Overall, they excuted the bakar part perefctly. They kept the dish simple but delicious. It was a bit pricey so i would save this place for special occasions.

Would i come here again? yes.
